A Proud Tradition
Valley Yacht Club (VYC) was formed by a group of 45 recreational power boaters at Murphy’s Boat Yard in Shelton, CT. The goal of the charter members were to provide an affordable and safe, family-oriented atmosphere for its members.
The Club was incorporated in June, 1967. The membership began a long and arduous search on the Housatonic River for a permanent home. They chose our present Milford, CT site and purchased the property in July and November of 1968. It took six years to obtain approvals and permits. Final approval was granted in June. 1974. They immediately started the “Fill Project" of the present 90 x 400 foot building site. Construction of the 56 slip marina consisting of two fixed piers, approximately 175 feet into the river and two 200 foot floating docks with attached finger slips was started and finally completed in 1985. All work was accomplished by the members themselves.
Plans for the current building were initiated in September of 1991. The design and permit process was completed in September, 1993. Construction started in October of 1993.
The VYC membership consists of 75 members and 3 honorary members. General meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month with various committee meetings held throughout the month. The Club continues to strive to provide its members with a host of social events, fishing tournaments, dock and theme parties and regattas. Winter activities include a Commodores Ball, organized trips and other assorted get-togethers.
Membership is working hard to further improve the club, from expanding and enclosing the clubhouse decks to further expanding the summer events schedule
